We’d like to announce the new additions to our crew as they threatened to burn down our PA speakers if we didn’t sign ‘em up on the spot, Without further ado we’d like to welcome on board The Old Sea Dog on Violin and Saucy Sue on melodeons and whistles! As for May we set sail for Brixham Pirate Festival and had a wonderful time playing in The Bullers Arms, our favourite haunt down that neck ‘o tha’ woods, we were supposed to be performing on the quay during the world record attempt but the weather was just too rotten to sit on the quayside and play, but despite the rain and high winds we assembled a mighty 1722 pirates down to the quayside, we once again hold the world record of most pirates in one place!
The Following weekend we set to playing bars, our Debut gig at the Ropemakers in Dorset went well but was rather quiet, but we found they have an excellent selection of ales of which we made much use of!
On the Sunday we took a trip up to Weston-Super-Mare, to the Raglan Arms, what we thought would be a tiny little bar turned out to be a great place for music, having its own separate room for us to play in..
Bearded Theory on the 14th and 15th was a right laugh for all involved, we showed up about 10 minutes before sound check, which went swimmingly, we got some beer and some dodgy welsh cider and headed to the stage, I hadn’t expected such a crowd for our first festival appearance this year, Even had ye all yelling Arrrr!
We spent the next afternoon playing oversized jenga and drinking pints of tea in the Something Else Tea Tent until Gail accused us of cheating!
We rounded it all off with a performance in said tent at around 8 o’clock, which was interesting as we only had 2 microphones, leaving Sam and Rob to fight over theirs!
The Monday took us to The Sharksfin, Mevagissey an unexpected jewel on the English coast, we arrived at the bar, then drove a mile down the narroest coastal road to the car park.
Bosun Roberts calls out that the Parking will be four quid, I reply “Four quid OR what?!” – Samwise nods at me in the “look behind you” kind of way, I turn around and there is a police officer stood right behind me with the biggest grin I ever saw!
Burnham-on-sea The Ritz Acoustic Club was a wonderful gig, they put on a great buffet and the cider that Samwise and I are particularly fond of was one pound seventy five a pint, needless to say we had a few of those.
The organisers asked us to finish the gig around eleven as most people go home around then. This was news to me as we launched into our 6th encore at half past eleven!
To round the month off we headed to Mount Edgecombe to perform at ScurvyScum, What a great place for piracy! We even had a pirate ship at our disposal, sadly the accursed rain set in and we took refuge in the Crimson Moon Tavern for several performances, and set Samwise off to work in the Giddy Kipper!
By all accounts the Sunday was rammed, great turnout by the public and wonderful sunny weather until we got on stage, it managed to hold off enough till we were done, then the sun came out!
Roll On June!
